The first day of school will be Wednesday, August 17. All week (August 17-19) will be minimum day. Students are expected to wear uniforms starting Wednesday.

Parents and students are all expected to attend the orientation on August 16. Uniforms will be sold following the orientation. 

Parents are requested to not go into the classrooms and disturb the teachers, who will be finalizing their preparations for the next day.

Inter-School Speech Competition

Registration:

The Inter-School Speech Competition, which will be held on Wednesday, May 18th, from 9:30am to 4:00pm at City of Knowledge, is intended to encourage Muslim students to strengthen their public speaking skills and self-confidence.  All students from 1st grade through 8th grade are welcome to participate.

Update: Registration for the speech competition is now closed. We hope to see you in the audience! 

Grade verification: All participants must bring proof of grade to verify the eligibility for the level. Registration desk may disallow or adjust the level at their own discretion, if proof is not provided. 

Theme: ISLAM: A WAY OF LIFE

Topics:

1st-3rd Grade: What it means to be a good Muslim

4th -5th Grade: "Love for your brother what you love for yourself"

6th-8th Grade: Prophet Muhammad SAW as the apex of moral character

Note: Please support your speech with Qur'an or hadith for bonus points.

Rating and Point Distribution:

**6-8th grade participants will receive a score of zero in this category if the speech is read from a document.

Time Allocation: Speeches are expected to last a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes. A bell will ring at the beginning of each speech, at the 2.5 minute mark, and at the 3 minute mark. If a speech exceeds 3 minutes, a final bell will ring, indicating a hard stop, at 3.5 minutes. 4 points will be deducted for any speech that exceeds 3 minutes.

Judges: An independent panel of 3 judges with independent scoring. Ratings from the 3 judges will be totaled to determine the positions in each category.

Dress Code: Professional attire. Suit, tie, and formal clothing is preferred.  For sisters, hijab is mandatory to participate in the competition. Come prepared like a public speaker to impress the judges.

Spring Festival

Celebrate the coming of summer at our annual Spring Festival! All are welcome. Events will include:

- A variety of fun and engaging booths including arts and crafts, face painting, henna painting, a petting farm, a dart challenge, math games, and other fun activities.

-A fun puppet show presented by LA Puppet Theater.

-A karate performance by the dojo of Eibu Kan Goju Ryu Karate, the most authentic school of martial arts!

-A fun visit and educational session by the police and fire departments. Kids will learn all about the jobs of firemen and policemen--and get to check out a fire truck in real life! 

-A comedy magic show that will engage the audience and have attendees of all ages laughing. 

-A variety of sports including basketball, soccer, volleyball and ping pong.

-A performance by City of Knowledge students.

...and of course, plenty of delicious food!

Interfaith Conversation

Join Sahar Alsahlani, proud parent of two City of Knowledge graduates, for an informal conversation about the work of the Community of Living Traditions and broader multifaith peace and justice initiatives. Sahar raised her family in the Inland Empire for many years before moving to New York to join the multifaith community at Stony Point Center, where she has lived and worked for the last four years. She is deeply involved in multifaith engagement and serves on the boards of Religions for Peace USA, the Council on American Islamic Relations, and the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Sahar, a GreenFaith Fellow, is also a regular media commentator on Islamophobia and Interfaith Activisim. Snacks and refreshments will be served.
