Advanced Placement

One area of focus of City of Knowledge education is on preparation for college.  CKS students are given the opportunity to earn college credits while attending CKS by enrolling in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. When students earn a passing grade on their AP examination at the end of the year, they may earn college credits towards a Bachelor’s degree.

Nearly 70% taking AP courses pass at least one AP exam.  AP scholars are students who take and pass 3 or more AP exams. Ethics

  1. To teach the belief system of Islam, as well as the practices and acts of worship and the philosophy of each of these acts.
  2. To introduce and teach Islamic history and Islamic jurisprudence, and the Holy Quran.
  3. To develop within the students a sense of Islamic global awareness.

Language Arts

  1. English is a required course for all four years of high school.  Each completed semester earns 5 units.  We offer several UC approved English courses including Honors English, and Advanced Placement English.

Course description (applies to grades 9–12):

Students will read a variety of literary genres: the novel, short story, poetry, drama, biography and essay.  They will read the works of a number of authors including the authors of contemporary works.  All courses will emphasize frequent writing assignments of various lengths, and students will learn to write persuasive, concise prose.  Grammar and composition skills will be reviewed to enhance writing proficiency.

INRODUCTION TO GRAMMAR/ INTERMEDIATE GRAMMAR: 1 year.  10 units.  Recommended for 9th grade.

INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE/ ADVANCED GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION:  1 year (10 units).  Recommended for 10th and 11th grade.

INTERMEDIATE LITERATURE: 1 year (10 units). Recommended for 10th and 11th grade.

BASIC ENGLISH:  For English as a Second Language Students and students who join the school with limited English mastery.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT AND HONORS ENGLISH:  1 year (10 units).  Recommended for 11th and 12th grade.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT AND HONORS LITERATURE:  1 year (10 units).  Recommended for 11th and 12th grade.

JOURNALISM/YEARBOOK:  1 year (10 units).  Recommended for grades 9-12.

Foreign Language: Arabic, the language of the Quran, is required of all students unless exempted by special permission.  Spanish as a foreign language is required of all high school students.

Arabic

  1. To teach the fundamentals of Qur’anic Arabic, and expose the students to the basics of Islamic culture.
  2. To enhance communication skills and increase vocabulary.
  3. To instill an appreciation of Arabic culture and heritage.  At the intermediate and higher levels, students will learn paragraph writing, grammar, and poetry.

Course description (applies to grades 9–12):

ARABIC I:  1 year. 10 units.

ARABIC II:  1 year. 10 units.

ARABIC III: 1 year. 10 units.

HONORS ARABIC 1 year 10 units ( GPA out of 5)

Spanish

  1. The beginning courses of Spanish are designed to enable students to use Spanish in simple conversations, to read basic Spanish material, and to express thoughts and concepts in Spanish.
  2. To master vocabulary memorization, comprehension, and application.
  3. Students are introduced to brief works in Spanish and Latin American literature and are exposed to cultural mores.

Course description (applies to grades 9–12):

SPANISH I:  1 year.  10 units.  Recommended for 9th grade.

SPANISH II:  1 year.  10 units.  Recommended for 10th grade.

SPANISH III:  1 year.  10 units.  Recommended for 11th grade.

Additional Requirements:

Physical Education: One year of Physical Education is required of all 9th graders, and one year in grades 10th, 11th, or 12th.

Mathematics: General Math , Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, AP Calculus.  All 1 year, 10 unit courses.

Social Studies: World History and Geography, US History and Government, .  All 1 year, 10 unit courses.

Sciences: Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Psychology, AP Environmental Sciences, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Physics.  All 1 year, 10 unit courses.

Fine Arts: One year of visual or performing arts.

Graduation Requirements

Requirements meet and exceed the entrance requirements of the University of California system.  These requirements will be revised periodically to satisfy any changes in the UC system requirements. For detailed information about the requirements of different colleges like Ivy League and private colleges consult with our College Counselor.
